Grande-Saline, also known in Haitian Creole as Grann Salin, is a coastal commune in Haiti’s Artibonite Department. It is located at the mouth of the Artibonite River and is known for its salt marshes, fishing, rice farming, and coastal landscape.
Grande-Saline was officially granted municipal status in 1876. The commune has a long history connected to salt production, river trade, agriculture, and Haiti’s coastal economy. Its location near the Artibonite River made it important for farming, fishing, and local commerce.
Life in Grande-Saline is strongly connected to agriculture, fishing, salt production, religion, and community traditions. The annual Saint André celebration on November 30 is one of the commune’s most important cultural events.
