L’Estère, also known in Haitian Creole as Lestè, is a commune in Haiti’s Artibonite Department. It is located in the fertile Artibonite Valley and is known for rice farming, local trade, and its position along Route Nationale 1.
L’Estère is historically important because the Battle of Ravine-à-Couleuvres took place nearby on February 23, 1803, during the Haitian Revolution. The area was reestablished in 1908 and officially became a commune in 1984.
Life in L’Estère is strongly connected to agriculture, markets, churches, community organizations, and local festivals. Rice cultivation is the main economic activity, while residents also grow plantains, maize, beans, and other crops.
