Marmelade, also known in Haitian Creole as Mamlad, is a mountain commune in Haiti’s Artibonite Department. It serves as the seat of the Marmelade Arrondissement and is known for its cool climate, fertile valleys, bamboo, coffee, and mountain scenery.
Marmelade was settled in 1786 and has deep historical roots from the colonial and revolutionary periods. Toussaint Louverture used Marmelade as a headquarters during the Haitian Revolution, and the commune was later incorporated into the Artibonite Department in 1906.
Life in Marmelade is strongly connected to agriculture, religion, local organizations, crafts, and community traditions. The commune is known for coffee, sugarcane, mangoes, beans, cassava, and bamboo furniture production.
