Lascahobas, also known in Haitian Creole as Laskawobas, is a commune in Haiti’s Centre Department. It is located in the Central Plateau near the Dominican Republic border and serves as the main city of the Lascahobas Arrondissement.
History & Heritage
Lascahobas was settled around 1760 and was officially granted municipal status in 1814. Its history is connected to TaÃno heritage, mahogany forests, colonial frontier life, post-independence military defense, and Haitian-Dominican border trade.
Life in Lascahobas is strongly connected to farming, local markets, religion, music, festivals, and border commerce. The commune produces coffee, sisal, tobacco, sugarcane, rice, maize, beans, vegetables, cattle, and mahogany, while its March 24 Saint Gabriel feast remains an important community celebration.
