Belladère, also known in Haitian Creole as Beladè, is a commune in Haiti’s Centre Department. It is located in the Las Cahobas Arrondissement on the border with the Dominican Republic and is one of Haiti’s most important border-trade towns.
Belladère was officially established as a municipality in 1948, though the area had earlier been recognized as a village within Las Cahobas. Its name comes from a Spanish term meaning “to guard” or “to post,” reflecting its historic role as a mountain-pass outpost.
Life in Belladère is shaped by farming, cross-border commerce, local markets, religion, transport, and community organizations. The commune produces peas, corn, peanuts, tobacco, coffee, beans, fruits, and root crops, while trade with the Dominican Republic remains central to the local economy.
