Saut-d’Eau, also known in Haitian Creole as Sodo and nicknamed Ville Bonheur, is a commune in Haiti’s Centre Department. It is located in the Mirebalais Arrondissement and is famous for its waterfall, religious pilgrimage, and natural beauty.
Saut-d’Eau was settled in 1885, became a district in 1905, and became a municipality in 1926. The commune’s identity is strongly connected to the famous waterfall and the July pilgrimage honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where Catholic and Vodou traditions come together.
Life in Saut-d’Eau is shaped by religion, Vodou traditions, farming, tourism, local markets, and community life. Every July, thousands of pilgrims visit the waterfall to pray, bathe, and take part in one of Haiti’s most important spiritual celebrations.
