Borgne, also known in Haitian Creole as Obòy, is a coastal commune in Haiti’s Nord Department. It serves as the seat of the Borgne Arrondissement and is known for its beaches, rivers, mountains, caves, agriculture, and fishing communities.
Borgne was formally established in 1754 and was formerly known as Embarcadère. Its history is connected to early fishing settlements, French colonial administration, Catholic parish life, Petit-Bourg, and local symbols of resistance such as the Marron Inconnu statue in Place du Borgne.
Life in Borgne is strongly connected to farming, fishing, Catholic traditions, local markets, football, basketball, community organizations, and coastal life. The commune produces bananas, cocoa, coffee, oranges, yams, and other crops, while fishing remains important along the northern coast.
