Plaisance, also known in Haitian Creole as Plezans, is a commune in Haiti’s Nord Department. It serves as the seat of the Plaisance Arrondissement and is located in the mountain region of northern Haiti, along the Trois Rivières Valley and Route Nationale 1.
Plaisance was settled in the 18th century and became known during the French colonial period for its cool climate, scenic mountain setting, and role as a rest stop between northern and interior routes. Its history is also connected to TaÃno territory, buccaneers, maroon communities, and the Haitian Revolution.
Life in Plaisance is strongly connected to agriculture, livestock, local markets, religion, community festivals, and mountain farming. The commune produces yams, sugarcane, cocoa, coffee, tobacco, timber, charcoal, and other local products.
