Dame-Marie, also known in Haitian Creole as Dam Mari, is a coastal commune in Haiti’s Grand’Anse Department. It is part of the Anse-d’Hainault Arrondissement and is located on the northwest tip of the Tiburon Peninsula.
Dame-Marie was first settled around 1737 near Dame-Marie Bay and became a municipality by 1776. Its history is connected to French colonial settlement, cocoa exports, coastal trade, gingerbread-style architecture, and the resilience of the community after major storms such as Hurricane Hazel.
Life in Dame-Marie is strongly connected to cocoa farming, fishing, small commerce, religion, festivals, and coastal community traditions. The commune is known as “The City of Flowers” and has a strong cultural identity tied to both land and sea.
