Dessalines, also known as Marchand-Dessalines, is a historic commune in Haiti’s Artibonite Department. It is one of Haiti’s most important heritage cities and is strongly connected to the country’s independence history.
Dessalines was named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti’s founding father and first head of state. After independence, the city briefly served as Haiti’s capital and became known as the First Black Capital of the New World.
The commune is known for its deep historical identity, rural communities, agriculture, local markets, religious traditions, and strong connection to the Artibonite Valley. Farming, crafts, and community life remain important parts of daily life.
