Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, also known in Haitian Creole as Grann Rivyè dinò, is a commune in Haiti’s Nord Department. It serves as the seat of the Grande-Rivière-du-Nord Arrondissement and is located about 17 kilometers south of Cap-Haïtien along the Grande-Rivière-du-Nord River.
Grande-Rivière-du-Nord is one of Haiti’s most historic communes and is known as the birthplace of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti’s founding father. The commune also has deep revolutionary history and was connected to early uprisings during the Haitian Revolution.
