Hinche, also known in Haitian Creole as Ench, is the capital of Haiti’s Centre Department. It is located in the Central Plateau and serves as an important administrative, cultural, economic, and transportation center for Haiti’s interior.
Hinche is one of Haiti’s oldest cities, settled in the early 1500s by Spanish families from the Canary Islands. The city has a deep colonial and revolutionary history and is also known as the hometown of Charlemagne Péralte, a major Haitian nationalist figure.
