Saint-Raphaël, also known in Haitian Creole as Sen Rafayèl, is a commune in Haiti’s Nord Department. It serves as the seat of the Saint-Raphaël Arrondissement and is located in the upper Central Plateau, along Route Nationale 3 between Cap-Haïtien and Hinche.
Saint-Raphaël was founded as San Rafael de La Angostura in 1761 by Canary Island settlers. It later became a Haitian commune in 1881 and has a history connected to Spanish colonial settlement, Toussaint Louverture, agriculture, and the development of Haiti’s inland northern routes.
Life in Saint-Raphaël is strongly connected to farming, irrigation, local markets, religion, transportation, and rural trade. The commune is known for bitter orange production used in French liqueurs, as well as tobacco, cane, cotton, food crops, and wood resources.
