Saint-Michel-de-l’Atalaye, also known in Haitian Creole as Sen Michèl Latalay, is a large commune in Haiti’s Artibonite Department. It is located in the Marmelade Arrondissement and is known for its fertile farmland, mountains, water sources, and historic town center.
Saint-Michel-de-l’Atalaye was founded in 1768 and was originally known as San Miguel de la Atalaya. In 1773, it became the site of the Treaty of San Miguel de la Atalaya, an important agreement connected to the colonial border between Saint-Domingue and Santo Domingo.
