Saint-Michel-de-l’Atalaye was founded in 1768 and was originally known as San Miguel de la Atalaya. In 1773, it became the site of the Treaty of San Miguel de la Atalaya, an important agreement connected to the colonial border between Saint-Domingue and Santo Domingo.
